We need good reviews! Help advertise TripleA!

This post was updated on .
Update:

Please help us by petitioning well known websites to review us, or talk about us!
Any well known video game or board game websites.

It will help bring in lots of new players, and also greatly helps us to keep our wikipedia page from getting torn down because they need "reliable and well known sources".

Old Post:

Using an email account that is shared with Sean Bridges, ComradeKev, Bung, and Veqryn,
I have created accounts with a couple high profile software vending websites, in order to get TripleA out there.

Here is a short list of all the places you can download TripleA from.
Also, we need good reviews.  So please visit these websites and give us 5 stars and say something nice about us.
With more people coming to play our game, we will have more people in the lobby to play with, more people trying out new games, and perhaps even some people interested in coding the engine and contributing to TripleA, the Axis & Allies online game engine.

Thanks in advance,
Veqryn

disappeared down a rabbit hole,

as much as i want to argue about what someone else uploaded to brothersoft....
i'd rather we all just gave some good reviews,
so i figured i'd try to keep this thread on topic

So far, as of today (june 9, 2010),

13,000 people have downloaded TripleA 1.2.5.4 from the main SourceForge page,
and another 1000 people have downloaded it from the other places it is hosted

thats 14,000 total,
and its increasing by about 250-300 more per day (according to sf download statistics)

thats awesome,
but also begs the question of why the heck the lobby always has the exact same number of people

with 14,000 people owning the game, i would expect at least 140 people online,
and if we are increasing by 300 a day, that should be at least like 3 more people per day online...

so how do we get people to play online?

are people just downloading TripleA, seeing that there are only 4 maps, and then uninstalling the game?
There should at least be a button on the main TripleA page that loads called "Help / FAQ / Where to DL Games" that opens a webpage at our stickied nabble post...

edit:
yes u-boat, this is just 1.2.5.4
(total downloads for all version included, from the beginning of time, is a half million, but that doesn't really tell us much of anything since there have been so many versions)

I bet that a lot of people, including myself, have only played the single player game, or are more interested in it than playing against human competition.  I used to play the Hasbro version of Axis and Allies (Iron Blitz)  and enjoyed playing it, though it had its buggy issues.  Playing online was somewhat fun, but it still took a lot of time due to the nature of the game.  What I mostly hoped for from TripleA was an improvement on that game's AI and more options for customization.  The level of customization is pretty good and has surpassed that game in this regard.  From the AI standpoint, there is a lack of interesting gameplay to me.  Primarly, the computer seems to be unable to win.  Just make all players computer controlled...come back after a couple hours... and you'll see what I mean.  Units that could easily take an enemy capital instead pile up in friendly territories.  There is a push to get to these territories, but the units move no further in order to win the game.

I like the game, but must be honest and admit that I haven't visited a lot recently because I've lost some interest in it because there hasn't been that much progress in single player gameplay.  I'm still hopefull because there seems to still be a lot of work being done on the game, but it seems AI is really low on the list of things to be done to improve the game.  I wonder if I am in the minority regarding the desire to see improved AI, or if this could explain the lack of online players and hesitation for widespread embracing of the game.   It might be a good idea to pose that question on the blog as a major topic.  Perhaps the target audience isn't quite where the developers think it is.

It sounds like (and I don't know) creating a good AI could be quite difficult.  If the AI could develop a strategy based on principles instead of pre-scripted (and predictable) strategy, it may go a long way toward improving the solo campaigns on all the other created maps as well.

Anyhow, that is my honest opinion as much as I am able to accurately express it.  I don't post hardly at all here, but I read a few of the posts and check now and then for updates to the game.  And I always look most specifically for improvements to the AI.  Does anyone agree, or am I in the minority on this?  Should we start a poll?

we agree, but the person who is or was coding the ai appears to have taken a break
someone else, squid daddy, posted a fix for a bunch of ai bugs, but neither kev nor sgb has looked at it yet because they do not know the ai code like the original coder
if you know someone who can help code, or at least look for logic errors in the ai, it would be great to see it improve

Yes, the AI is definitely something that should be worked on, but there aren't many people that have time to work on it.

Sean Bridges and Comrade Kev are either working hard on bugs and features or taking well deserved breaks now and then. Kevin #2 (AI Developer) has taken a break from working on the AI which he had been doing well for months. I have been spending ALL of my programming time lately working on the map creator which I am trying to finish as quickly as possible without making mistakes. The other developers spend most of their time fixing bugs and adding cool features.

If we could find just a few more skilled programmers to help, I think the AI would develop much more quickly. (I know that sounds weird, but I think that's how you're supposed to word it. ... develop much more quickly... :P)

I wonder how we'd be able to find more developers?

Any ideas, anyone?

I think the map creator is a great feature that has the potential of bringing a lot of the more creative, but less casual, fans into the fold.  With Map Creator, having an intelligent AI might help a lot in giving one the ability to test your own maps in the early stages of their development.  If the AI were smart enough to be able to create strategy based on what its opponent does, and territory layout, then maybe it could cover a wide variety of maps without having to be redesigned each time.  If new AI gets developed I would enjoy testing it.  In fact, the first thing I personally look for in every new version of TripleA is if the AI has improved.

Maybe there's a way a bulletin can be sent to some of the game design programs out there (DigiPen or the like) that actually breed game programmers?  I assume its probably not Xbox level programming, but may be a step in that direction for them, and may be appealing (let alone being something to put on a resume).

Mambo4
a small thing that could prevent people from deleting the game when they see it has only four maps...

when you click the "download maps" button,
Put a functioning default entry (perhaps the supply depot?) in the "select a download site " field.

Otherwise it's likely kill any borderline enthusiasm....only us hardcore geeks will actually Google  for how to get more maps.

the issue with that are certain maps that are on the supply depot....

perhaps I can make a new xml file that includes all maps except for the ... certain... maps

i agree tho... it needs to be easier to go get more maps

RE: We need good reviews (TripleA is now on Cnet and Fileplanet, etc.)

Pulicat
My theory about the low-lobby-user-number-paradox:

1) The #1 biggest turnoff for TripleA is the issue of hosting. Most people are not geeky enough / care enough to go play with their routers to enable port forwarding to allow for hosting, and even if there are tech savvy people out there, some routers (like mine) could be shitty and give problems. And currently living through a period without hosting capability (i call it hosting drought) I can tell you from experience how difficult it is for a non-hoster to get a game in the lobby. You gotta beg, ask, or just get lucky. Often the games open are not the ones you really want to play, etc. Other game sites like gametableonline have their own servers that lets any Average Joe start a multiplayer game with anybody else. In fact, a whole bunch of people I've talked to on gametableonline have heard of TripleA -- and they tell me they go to GTO to play because they cant host in the TripleA lobby.
2) A lot of the download volume recorded by sourceforge could be people looking for hotseat play, ie. as a substitute for the physical board in face to face play.
how now brown cow?

i don't think it is hosting,

because if it was hosting, we would be seeing them logging on to try hosting then fail and log off,

we aren't seeing practically anyone logging onto the online lobby, at least not compared with the 18,000 who have downloaded the game so far
(the lobby has maybe 10-50 people)
