How to turn on Alternative Relief Tile feature (Step-by-Step Guide)

Prussia
Relief tiles are artistic creations stamped onto the maps to make them look nice. Most popular maps in TripleA now have relieft tiles, and some maps (NWO, Big World, Diplomacy) have multiple sets of relief tiles available for use. A cool feature exist for maps with more than 1 set of relief tiles, which allow players to select the set of relief tiles they want DURING the game.

This guide provide step-by-step instructions on how it can be done. Please note that NWO and Diplomacy already have alternative relief feature properly set up. It is oriented to Windows users, however, similar settings will exist for other operating systems.

I will use Big World as an example (Just happen to be the map I'm working on). Currently there is no relief tile in the big_world folder, but compatible tiles are available in the big_world_variation directory in the Map Depot.

Steps:

1. Locate your relief tiles. Most of the time they are in a folder downloaded from the Depot and the default location is a zip file under C:\Documents and Settings\Prussia\triplea\maps\big_world_variations.zip. Obviously substitute your computer's user name into "Prussia". Another common map storage location is C:\Program Files\triplea\triplea_1_2_5_5\maps. Copy your folders of relief tiles onto your desktop and name them to something you can recognize, say "relief1" and "relief2"

2. In the same directory, make a copy of your zip or folder and rename it to "big_world_variations-alternate_relief". The first part before the dash should be exactly the same as the original "big_world_variation" directory, and you may change the "alternate_relief" to anything you like, but with no spaces after the dash. Now you should have both "big_world_variation" and "big_world_variations-alternate_relief" under "maps".

3. In the "big_world_variations-alternate_relief" zip or folder, delete the "games" folder (we don't want duplicate copies of the game showing up) and delete the "reliefTiles" folder under both "big_world_variations-alternate_relief" and "big_world_variation". DO NOT DO THIS UNLESS YOU HAVE DONE STEP 1!!!

4. Copy "relief1" to "big_world_variation" and rename it "reliefTiles". Copy "relief2" to "big_world_variations-alternate_relief" and rename that folder "reliefTiles".

5. Start TripleA, select "Big World : 1942 v3 rules" (The name of the game being loaded.) and run the game.

6. Under View => Map Skin, you can now choose which set of relief tiles you want!!

Enjoy!~

And for anyone thinking of making relief tiles, you may encounter this error:
the "Map Details" option is greyed out, meaning that you can't click on it to change to or out of relief tiles.

Solution: change the map.properties file to read:
map.hasRelief=true
instead of false

also, for a more general view of how map skins work

lets say the name of your map is "XXXXX"

and you want a new map skin for it

just name the map skin's folder "XXXXX-yyyyy"
the "-yyyyy" tells triplea that it is a map skin

IN this map skin folder, you need to include EVERYTHING except for the "games" folder.
This means you need units, flags, basetiles, relief tiles, everything.
But you can't have the games folder, you can't have a map xml.

This means that a MAP SKIN can do much more than relief tiles can.  You can change the unit artwork, you can change the flags, you can change the basetiles, you can change the shape of territories too (edit the polygons file, centers file, etc).  You could completely redesign a map to look completely different, even a different size, and still play against people using the old map, because this is just a 'skin'.

thx for the tutorial prussia,

Let's say in the skin I only included units, does that mean it will still use the rest of the stuff from the original map folder? Or, will it not load at all?

If not isn't there like a Dependency.txt thing I can do? How does this work for skins? I figure if you only wanted to change the unit images, you might not want to have to copy everything into a skins folder to be space consuming considerate.
